Transitions Within the Program Day

  1. Written daily routine—each of our classrooms follows a consistent routine.  (Posted).

  2. Plentiful time for play—since children learn primarily though their play activities in a choice time, we minimize our number of transitions throughout the day.

  3. Notice of change of activity—prior to switching any activities, teachers give verbal warnings, teachers set visual and alarmed timers and teachers are consistent with the daily schedule.

  4. Songs, finger plays, and movement during transition and waiting times—when children are waiting for an activity to begin teachers engage in songs, doing finger plays, participating in movement activities, etc.  This is so children are not sitting idly; but rather having fun and learning while they wait.
